Welcome address

Aachen is a lifely city with historic roots. Aachen - also known as Aix-la-Chapelle or Aken in our neighbouring countries - is the city of Charlemagne, who once ruled from here an empire of truly European dimensions. The cultural impulses given by the great Frankish Kaiser, which still have an effect today, have profoundly influenced the further development of our continent in the following centuries. As the coronation site of the kings of the Holy Empire, Aachen had a reputation far beyond Europe. The Aachen Cathedral was the first German building that was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Located in the heart of the city, it is a monument of European significance and represents a symbol of Europe.

Today, Aachen is also a city of science that enjoys an outstanding national and international reputation thanks to our universities. Cutting-edge research is conducted at these educational and scientific institutions addressing the basis of our future life.

One of these important areas is catalysis. I am therefore delighted that one of the leading international conferences, EuropaCat, will be held in our city! It demonstrates the importance of this science from basic research to industrial application and its pivotal role in addressing ecologic, economic, and societal challenges.

The motto "Catalysis without Borders" highlights on the one hand the need for symbiotic and productive cooperation across disciplinary borders. At the same time, it reflects the increasing importance of international networks to address global challenges. EuropaCat 2019 provides an excellent platform to promote these goals stimulating catalysis research in Aachen, in our three-country region, and beyond.

I wish all participants of this important conference interesting discussions, a fruitful exchange, and above all new impulses and inspiration. Personally, I wish that during your visit in Aachen you will also have the chance to explore our historic town, to enjoy the special, almost Mediterranean flair, and to visit the landmarks of our city, in particular the cathedral and the town hall. I am sure you will leave Aachen with nice memories and beautiful impressions. And if you intend to return to the experience, you will be always warmly welcome!
